International trade in goods has surged to 10% above pre-Covid-19 pandemic levels, according to the dhl Trade Growth Atlas, which charts global trade trends.

It shows that despite the war in Ukraine, trade is expected to grow faster in 2022 and 2023 than in the past decade.

The atlas shows that new trade growth leaders are emerging in South and Southeast Asia, while exports from sub-Saharan Africa have grown substantially.

Vietnam, India and the Philippines are also doing well in terms of projected trade growth through 2026.

The report was prepared in conjunction with the New York University Stern School of Business. Covering 173 countries, it provides business intelligence to policymakers and industry leaders.

It analyzes global trade in goods between advanced and emerging economies by region.

Key findings from the dhl growth map

Other highlights of the report include:

  • The pandemic has not been the major setback to global trade that many expected. Even in the face of severe supply bottlenecks that limit further growth, international trade in goods is still up 10% from pre-pandemic levels.
  • The outlook for future trade growth remains positive. Trade growth forecasts have been revised down due to the Ukraine war, but trade growth in 2022 and 2023 is expected to outpace the previous decade.
  • E-commerce sales have boomed during the pandemic, and forecasts suggest that cross-border e-commerce will continue to grow strongly.

John Pearson, CEO of dhl Express, said: “Our goal is to make the dhl Trade Growth Map the go-to resource for understanding and navigating changes in the global trade landscape.

“In the current global business environment, dhl can help customers rethink certain supply chains, allowing them to make smart trade-offs between cost and risk, making them both efficient and secure.

“As a leading logistics provider, we provide solutions for all logistics needs and have proven stable and reliable service even in volatile market conditions.

“International trade is considered particularly important under the current circumstances, as it can accelerate economic growth, reduce inflation, and enable countries and companies to access multiple sources of key inputs.”
